A Hack Club YSWS for Manim
Make an idea move.
Build a technical animation with Python and Manim. Ship the video and source. We ship a LAMY fountain pen.
Pick your tier.
Ship all four.
A new individual project about a real technical idea, started during Glyphic.
At least 720p and long enough for your tier. Caption or transcribe spoken content.
Manim source, assets, dependencies, README, storyboard, credits, and render instructions.
Hackatime tracking, meaningful commits, sources, licenses, and an AI-use disclosure.
Full project rules +
- Manim must create the core explanatory scenes.
- Imported assets may support the explanation, but cannot replace it.
- No old projects, tutorial reskins, double-dipping, fabricated time, or idle render time.
- You must understand every part of your submission.
- Non-common claims need sources. External assets need credits and licenses.
Good to know.
What is a YSWS?+
You Ship, We Ship. Finish an eligible project and Hack Club sends you the reward for its tier.
Is Glyphic free?+
Yes. There is no entry fee or purchase required.
Who can participate?+
Teenagers ages 13–18 can participate. Projects are individual.
Do I need to know Manim already?+
No. You can learn as you build. Basic Python will help.
Where can I try Manim?+
Use Manim’s interactive tutorial ↗ in your browser.
What can I animate?+
Any accurate technical explanation, including math, science, computing, engineering, economics, linguistics, or music theory.
Does it need narration?+
No. Spoken work needs captions or a transcript. Silent work should still be understandable.
How are hours counted?+
Track active work with Hackatime. Planning, scripting, coding, debugging, editing, captions, and documentation count. Idle render time does not.
Can I use AI?+
You may use it to learn, brainstorm, or debug if disclosed. You must write and understand the submitted work.
Can I use an old project or tutorial?+
No. Start after Glyphic opens. Tutorial copies, prior work, and projects submitted elsewhere do not count.
What if I miss my target tier?+
Your project can qualify for a lower tier if it meets that tier’s requirements.
